Goodbye to a living wall in British Colombia

Thomson Rivers University in British Columbia have a lovely 760 square foot living wall. Well, they had one. It was installed in 2011 sadly, it seems, it's location (near the library and the humidity jeopardizing the books), maintenance cost ($20,000-$30,000/year, which breaks down to $26-$39/square foot per year!!!), and general disinterest (70% of those surveyed wanted it gone) combined to mean it's all over.

Events in October

We've hit September folks and those events which seemed like the distant future are right around the corner.

On October 15 forty-five cities will sign an urban food policy pact. That's World Food Day, by the way. Milan is leading the way, hopefully this leads to coordination of urban food policies around the world.

Also, I must mention the World Green Infrastructure Network's 2 day symposium bookends World Food Day, it runs from October 14-16. This year, Nagaya, Japan welcomes the green infrastructure world.

2 Green roof (and wall!) events, one near and one far

For the one in Toronto. The Conservation Council of Ontario is hosting a Green Energy Doors Open event tomorrow from 1-3 pm. If you've never had a tour of the amazing Robertson Building here's your chance to see their green wall and green roof.

And just a little reminder that the World Green Infrastructure Congress kicks off next Tuesday, October 7!

Three upcoming green roof conferences

In Atlanta, Georgia in a couple of weeks, Green Roofs For Healthy Cities is holding a regional symposium. It's nice to have more local gatherings staged throughout the year, the GRHC conferences always seem to be held at the worst possible times for me.
Sydney, Australia has its World Green Infrastructure Congress October 7-10. Hosted by Green Roofs Australia, the scope includes urban greening, green roofs and living facades.
In Qingdao, China in mid-October look out for the Qingdao International Ecocity and Green Roof Conference. Put together by the International Rooftop Landscaping Association, conferences in China tend to be a big affair.

Hope you can take one of them in!

Don't put crocodiles in your rooftop garden!

It's wonderful when public officials just "Get It!" The mayor of Montreal seems to be one of them, when it comes to urban agriculture. He's encouraging Montrealers to grow food in public spaces and relaxing zoning laws to allow more commercial and residential urban agriculture, in addition to giving them the right to sell to grocery stores or sell on their farms!

-There were a couple of articles about a living wall in California which had failed and is now a communal eyesore. I wanted to see what kind of living wall this was, it seems to be more of a vegetated sound barrier than a "living wall", in my view. What do you think?



-A new title holder for the world's largest vertical garden/living wall has been crowned.

-Check out this handy garden sensor which can relay real-time data about the status of your garden and if you like the idea, support them on Kickstarter.

-We need a 596 acres-esque company in every city! By piecing together every master plan in New York City history they have found sites that were planned open spaces that were behind fences and opened them for public use and helped residents understand why things look the way they do.

-Lastly to follow up on Monday's post about rooftop terraculture, if you're going to do it, make sure to stock your rooftop pool with easy to handle animals. So that would eliminate crocodiles!

MIT + RPI make waves in the vertical gardening world

Last week's big news was Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's unveiling of its first public-scale green wall prototype. But I haven't been able to find any pictures of the new prototype. In fact, the pictures I have seen are actually of different prototypes from at least 5 years old. See same picture, different year. Has anyone seen any new photos?

-Other big news came from MIT via this article describing their efforts perfecting vertical gardening.
If MIT sets its mind on creating a food producing green wall, the burgeoning vertical gardening movement could be turned upside down very quickly.

-A couple of years ago I wrote about Boston urban gardens wrestling with contamination and wondered if this could be problematic for other jurisdictions. It appears it is in New York too...or was...maybe???

OMAN- The Agriculture and Fisheries Development Fund (AFDF) plans to introduce an integrated system of aquaponics (agriculture and aquaculture) throughout the country.
Introduced recently in a limited way as a pilot project, aquaponics has been found to be most suitable to Oman, Ahmed Shams al Siyabi, who heads the AFDF’s Technical Section, told the Observer.
Aquaponics is a system of aquaculture in which the waste produced by farmed fish or other aquatic animals supplies nutrients for plants grown hydroponically, which in turn purify the water.
Shedding light on AFDF’s future plans, Al Siyabi said the fund has a programme to cover more people for giving financial and advisory assistance, and to introduce new ideas and techniques in order to improve breeding, farm and fishing activities.
There is also a plan to provide better boats to fishermen so that they can have access to farther places in the sea. The AFDF gives partial and full funds to farmers, breeders, fishermen to start and expand their projects.
Al Siyabi said the Ministry of Finance gives around RO 3.5 million to the AFDF for extending free financial assistance to projects in agriculture, livestock and fisheries.
The projects are spread out from Musandam to Dhofar, including very remote and difficult places like Jabal Abiad in Sharqiyah, and Jabal Akhdhar in Dhakhiliyah. More funds will be available for people everywhere.

A report released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries last year shows that fish and agricultural production in 2012 increased to RO 462 million in comparison with RO 362.2 million recorded in 2009, as the annual growth average recorded in 2009-2013 was 8.5 per cent and the value of the agricultural production has steadily increased.
Fish production increased from RO 110,700 in 2009 to 142,000 in 2012, which marks a promising growth in the value of production of key sectors. The study indicated that the agricultural sector is a cornerstone of agricultural development and its contribution is significant in increasing the GDP and employment, as the sector has seen a significant increase in the rate of self-sufficiency in agricultural products.

Researchers from the School of Architecture at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute working at the Institute’s Center for Architecture Science and Ecology (CASE) in New York City have spent the past several years researching ways to harness plants’ natural abilities to filter toxins out of the air into an application that could be used in indoor spaces like office buildings. On Monday, May 12, those researchers will unveil the first public-scale prototype of their green wall. Two panels of plants, each 6 feet long and 7 feet tall and containing about 30 densely packed plants, will hang on a wall in the Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies (CBIS) building on the Rensselaer campus. “The work that will be unveiled at CBIS is the result of years of interdisciplinary research at CASE spanning the fields of environmental and mechanical engineering, biology, and architectural sciences. We have recently expanded the team to include collaborators from the Rensselaer Smart Lighting Research Center and the departments of chemistry and chemical engineering. The technologies CASE researchers are developing, like this green wall, have the potential to revolutionize our ability to deliver clean air to urban populations, and reduce the carbon footprint of cities and buildings, by reducing the fossil fuel consumption of the heating, cooling, and ventilation systems,” said Anna Dyson, director of CASE. CBIS is supporting the installation as part of an ongoing interest in expanding the boundaries of biotechnology research – beyond the core disciplines of science and engineering – to include interdisciplinary projects in architecture, humanities, arts and social sciences, and management. “We are very pleased to host the first public-scale prototype of this technology in CBIS,” said Deepak Vashishth, director of CBIS. “Our partnership with CASE is one example of the broad spectrum of research we are developing. Researchers from the School of Architecture at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute working at the Institute’s Center for Architecture Science and Ecology (CASE) in New York City have spent the past several years researching ways to harness plants’ natural abilities to filter toxins out of the air into an application that could be used in indoor spaces like office buildings.
On Monday, May 12, those researchers will unveil the first public-scale prototype of their green wall. Two panels of plants, each 6 feet long and 7 feet tall and containing about 30 densely packed plants, will hang on a wall in the Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies (CBIS) building on the Rensselaer campus.
“The work that will be unveiled at CBIS is the result of years of interdisciplinary research at CASE spanning the fields of environmental and mechanical engineering, biology, and architectural sciences. We have recently expanded the team to include collaborators from the Rensselaer Smart Lighting Research Center and the departments of chemistry and chemical engineering. The technologies CASE researchers are developing, like this green wall, have the potential to revolutionize our ability to deliver clean air to urban populations, and reduce the carbon footprint of cities and buildings, by reducing the fossil fuel consumption of the heating, cooling, and ventilation systems,” said Anna Dyson, director of CASE.
CBIS is supporting the installation as part of an ongoing interest in expanding the boundaries of biotechnology research – beyond the core disciplines of science and engineering – to include interdisciplinary projects in architecture, humanities, arts and social sciences, and management.
“We are very pleased to host the first public-scale prototype of this technology in CBIS,” said Deepak Vashishth, director of CBIS. “Our partnership with CASE is one example of the broad spectrum of research we are developing. The concept of bringing the outdoors inside buildings isn’t a new one in architecture, but what makes this green wall prototype different is the way air is pulled through the plants to maximize the amount of airborne toxins filtered out.
“This particular green wall takes a step beyond previous green walls in that it seeks to improve air quality by amplifying the air filtration that naturally occurs in plants,” said Matt Gindlesparger a lecturer at CASE who has led the research and prototyping of the green wall.
Removing toxins from the air is an increasingly important area of research, Gindlesparger said, because nearly every material used in building construction – including paint and carpeting – involves synthetic finishes that contain, and slowly release, volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. By harnessing the power of plants, the effects of those VOCs can be mitigated.
Gindlesparger said CBIS was a natural choice as a venue to showcase the green wall prototype: “CBIS is uniquely situated as part of the larger research culture of the Rensselaer campus and so this is a strategic alliance of the work we’re doing at CASE and the School of Architecture and the larger Institute.”
The prototype green wall is designed to be mobile so research on its effects can be conducted in different settings. The two panels can be coupled or de-coupled and moved into different environments within the building; they will initially be connected directly to the plumbing at CBIS, but the system is also designed with a water tank so it can operate without being directly connected to plumbing.
The green wall will be unveiled at 2 p.m. Monday, May 12, in the atrium of the CBIS building.

The future of living architecture...

...is definitely food.

Planning for Expo Milano (the 2015 World Fair) and it's “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life" theme has begun, and should include a massive, vertical farm.

The future of living architecture may also be algae.



Easily implemented around existing structures, fast growing and beautiful, with a cultural shift in the definition of food, this could be huge some time soon.

Urban agriculture gets the National Inquirer treatment + $200 green wall

This is probably the first GILA article I have ever read which somehow manages to incorporate violent crime and takes a turn towards the truly sensationalistic.

-Check out this living wall in Jakarta, which reportedly costs only $200. How is that possible?



-Whenever Nevin Cohen publishes something new, we would be wise to listen. His recent paper shows that race and class based disparities, in addition to resource needs, still remain in the urban agriculture system. For any municipal official, this would be a handy tool.

-Toronto's own Foodshare shares some more information about their tremendously successful and productive School Grown initiative plus details about their Eastdale Collegiate Institute's Rooftop garden.

-I don't know if this job exists, if not, it could be a great opportunity for someone. The other day I spied this article about urban agriculture in China. No doubt, there is much more going on there than we ever hear about, simply because it is not written in English. Perhaps there is someone who can splash some cash to pay people to translate relevant articles about their subject of interest to leap the linguistic barriers.

Philly official wants a green roof tax credit

Although the New York City green roof tax abatement deadline for 2014 ,just passed on March 15, beginning July 1, 2014 the per project allotment has doubled from $100,000 to $200,000 and one can receive $5.23 per square foot, up from the already generous $4.50.

-State Rep. Brian Sims, D-Philadelphia introduced several bills designed to stimulate green job growth. Of particular note is his proposed Green Roof Tax Credit, available to all sectors with at least four layers (waterproof membrane, drainage, medium and plants). The tax credit would be up to 25% of total cost incurred. The tax credit will not exceed $10 million per year.

-In Australia horticultural researchers from the University of Melbourne have released a new study in the Journal of Plant and Soil detailing some fantastic native green roof plants. The lead researcher, Dr. Claire Farrell, is a true superstar. You can see some of the other papers she has published over the last couple of years.
Speaking of Melbourne, I forgot to throw up a link to Melbourne and Victoria new green roof, wall and fascades guide released last month.

-I'll wind up with some green (living) wall information. London is hosting a green walls forum in mid-April. Mayor Boris Johnson has a target of 5% coverage (in central London) by 2030 and this conference (one of the first in the world) confirms his support. It seems like a collegial gathering, focused on information sharing the latest academic research, systems and life cycle analysis.

Book reviews: "The age proof garden" and "1000 designs for the garden"

It's been a while since my last book review. But I have been on a reading kick. More good stuff to share! The first one up is called 1000 designs for the garden. Written by Geraldine and Ian Rudge in 2011, it is a great book for a design professional looking for a specific product for a gardening projects. Or even for a little inspiration. Of course, with products which look this good they must be pricey

The second book for today is The age-proof garden : 101 practical ideas and projects for stress-free, low-maintenance senior gardening, shown step by step in more than 500 photographs by Patty Cassidy With a title like this I wondered if it would have a horticultural therapy bent. And it does, is a practitioner in the Washington/Oregon areas. This book is for seniors who haven't gardened before. If this description fits you or someone you know, give this book a look. With simple instructions on how to make various gardens (like a lettuce garden) it's a great resource for beginners. The book truly shines with instructions on how to make "gardens that stimulate the sense", in particular a sound garden sounds like a fantastic idea.

Pair the sound garden idea with a product from the 1000 designs book and you've got a garden going on!

Gift guide for living architecture lovers - 2013 edition

I did one of these last year and it seemed to be a hit! This year's I won't wait until December 23 before posting it, however...

Technical green roof time and then the eye candy

A few technical stories to get us going...

-The UK's first cradle-to-cradle demonstration project is scheduled to begin very soon. By-products from tenants will be turned into, among other things, aggregate material to be used as drainage in green roofs.

-And in Greece scientists are investigating which native plants might work best on a Mediterranean green roof.

And now for the visually stunning...

-Patrick Blanc has done it again! The tallest vertical garden will belong to the industry's godfather with a tremendous project slated to be completed in Australia later this year. If it looks anything like the following, it will raise the bar for us all.

-I had never heard of Dezeen before this week, but will check them out again after they posted pictures of this incredible kindergarten rooftop gardening project in Vietnam.

GILA word of the week: Pinkhouse

Good stuff from the last week. 

-There are sooooo many people working on vertical farming techniques and solutions and it's great when folks with good ideas come to the surface to share what they've been working on for decades.
Like this "pink house" idea, which the researcher proposes would best fit in the suburbs. 

-Here's a fantastic hotel in Dubai:




With over 27,000 plants spread across six floors, this is probably the biggest living wall in the United Arab Emirates.

- If you're involved in the rainwater catchment industry, here's your chance to give a little bit of information to help fill out the American Rainwater Catchment Systems Association. ARCSA is conducting their first survey (which is due May 31) in over 20 years!

GILA word of the week: Fruit activist

No trace of the Hanging Garden has ever been found in Babylon for the simple reason that this wonder of the ancient world was never there in the first place, according to an Oxford researcher.


Whether you consider the installation and care of fruit trees as “art”, is another matter, but more fruit trees in the world, especially on city streets, is definitely a good thing.

-Well, that didn’t take long. Several parties are interested in what remains of the Sweet Water Organics facility, including some former employees and local professors and entrepreneurs. Their complete proposal hasn’t been released yet, however it includes a commercial kitchen which can serve the fish and vegetables processed in the adjoining facilities.

-In September I posted a story about an aquaponics operation in Abu Dhabi. The facility was quietly kept under wraps until it was up and running and very little information about the people behind the idea was ever released. This is the first article I have seen which talks about the manager and driving force behind the project, Jabber Al Mazroui. They even have been able to grow watermelon!

-Whenever I give a talk about living walls I reference on of the most well-known examples, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Now it seems the gardens were never in Babylon, but 300 miles further north in Ninevah.

Europe's Green Infrastructure conference starts May 13


This year's International Green Roof Association (IGRA) will be held in Hamburg, Germany from May 13-15 2013.

Most living architecture professionals have their hands full right now planning and installing. Our first green roof of the year is coming up soon, in preparation for that I was checking out North American native stonecrops and stumbled across a great website. I am doing my best to find an updated website, so far, no dice. But the International Crassulaceae Network would be tremendous find for anyone in the industry. Check out this list of native North and South American sedum species plants; I have never seen anything like this!

Urban agriculture + horticultural therapy summer internships

Green energy and green walls - with algae

I profiled a bio-adaptive building late last year. At the time, it was just a fantastic concept with pretty pictures. Fast forward three months and the building is going up!

-If you're in Philadelphia, hopefully in the next few months you'll be able to use a new app called "GrowShare". The app lets you search for vacant lots which could be used for urban gardens or farms and share growing resources as well.

World's largest living wall - now & September 2012 + Edible infrastructure meets middle school

With the title of "World's Largest Living Wall" constantly changing hands, I decided it's time to put a date on the blog post. Pretty soon, I'll need not just month and year, but the day as well!

I was excited to read about the current champ on a reputable website...when I noticed that the designers name and the pictures looked kind of familiar.

Also starting tomorrow is a permaculture conference at Oregon State University. This one lasts even longer...until March 22, 2013.

Often folks interested in permaculture feel more comfortable with college/university based permaculture offerings, which is totally understandable. Here are a few more if the Oregon State dates don't work for you:

Green roofs set to get a big boost in DC...8 years from now?


-Washington DC is grappling with how to deal with its stormwater and is considering expanding its popular green roof program to help with some other green infrastructure technologies as well.

Several questions are raised by the article, for instance, what has the District been doing over the last 8 years since they were sued by the federal government to put these stormwater drains in place? And do they really need another 8 years to experiment with the various green technologies before backing them completely?

-In Victoria, Australia a local advocate is imploring green infrastructure enthusiasts to use a local policy to fund their projects. If you follow his lead, you have up to $10,000,000 at your disposal for either green roofs or green walls!
